Detroit, MI
Detroit hasn’t developed the best reputation over the years, but it’s certainly making a comeback. This underdog city is overflowing with fresh creativity and gritty charm, and if you’re into abandoned buildings, Detroit’s derelict car factories will feel like a playground.
Stay in Detroit to experience one of the most offbeat cities in the Midwest. Aside from the rough-around-the-edges feel, sights like the Detroit Historical Museum and Detroit Institute of Arts will keep you busy.
Duluth, MN
One of the most interesting cities in Minnesota, Duluth is a must-visit if you’re passing through the state. The city sits on the shores of Lake Superior, which is among the largest freshwater lakes in the world, making for a peaceful and picturesque setting.
Book yourself into a hotel in Duluth and spend a few days experiencing the culture and nature that bursts from this city. Canal Park is a particularly good area to start with as it’s full of fun things to see and do.
Columbus, OH
As the largest city in Ohio, you’d expect a lot to be happening in Columbus – and you’d be right. The city’s COSI (Center of Science and Industry) has been voted one of the top science museums in the country, so it is well worth stopping by if you’re in the area.
Alternatively, if you’re a coffee fanatic simply hit the Columbus Coffee Trail and explore some of the best cup o’ joe the city has to offer. As a big city there are plenty of hotels in Columbus – both high-end and budget – that will suit your needs.

South Bend, IN
Although not many tourists think to visit Indiana, the city of South Bend might make you add more places in this state to your Midwest itinerary. South Bend has plenty of culture to soak up – head to the Basilica of the Sacred Heart to gawp at outstanding architecture, or drop by the Studebaker National Museum to step through the history of North American automobiles. There are wide range of hotels in South Bend, and many are very affordable.
Salt Lake City, UH
Salt Lake City (or just about anywhere in the state of Utah for that matter) is as pretty as a picture. Book a Salt Lake City hotel and spend a few days roaming the area, starting at the Great Salt Lake. Here you can bike, hike, and learn more about this beautiful region.
If you’d rather stay urban, there are plenty of things to do in Salt Lake City. Begin at Historic Temple Square, where you can learn more about the roots of the city and stroll around the surroundings streets.
