5 Offbeat Cities in the Pacific North West
The Pacific NW is a region of the USA that’s known for its outstanding beauty and quirky cities like Seattle and Portland. However, large parts of this area are relatively untouched by tourism; these five cities are shining examples of some of the hidden gems that can be found here.
1. Bend, Oregon
Not thought about visiting Bend? Big mistake. Located in the center of the state of Oregon, Bend is right in the thick of all the gorgeous natural wonders Oregon has to offer. From hiking in the warm summer months to skiing down Mt Bachelor in winter, this is a playground for anyone who loves the outdoors. Plus, as many people come and go through this beautiful mountain town, there are plenty of affordable and comfortable hotels in Bend to settle into.

2. Spokane, Washington
One of Washington’s unexpected delights, located in the east right next to the border with Montana, Spokane is a city that should definitely go on your Pacific North West to-do list. With lots going on all year round – festivals, ale trails, live music, wineries to visit and plenty of hikes in the area – there’s never a dull moment in Spokane. If you’re doing a tour around this part of the US, make sure this off-the-track city is on your itinerary.
3. Salem, Oregon
You might have heard spooky tales of Salem over in Massachusetts, but Salem in Oregon is a different story. This town is the state capital of Oregon, which means it’s brimming with museums and galleries, beautiful architecture (in particular don’t miss the Oregon State Capitol building) plus Salem is a great place to learn about Oregon’s history. Although it’s easy to get lured away by Oregon’s top spots, we recommend that you stay in Salem for a few days to give it a chance to wow you.

4. Kent, Washington
Under 20 miles from mighty Seattle, Kent is often overshadowed – but that’s not to say that you should overlook it yourself. This leafy town enjoys a relaxed, slow-pace way of life, so visitors are encouraged to book a hotel in Kent and stay for a day or two to get into the swing of things. Take a stroll around the Hydroplane & Raceboat Museum or get some fresh air in one of its numerous parks. Enjoy the contrast to Seattle’s hectic nature that this calm, quiet area offers.
5. SeaTac, Washington
Also not far from Seattle, SeaTac is a charming Washington suburb. One of the best things to do here is to stroll through the Highline SeaTac Botanical Garden, which is made up of over 10 acres of lush greenery, including Japanese Garden and all kinds of display gardens. SeaTac is close to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (which explains its name) so this is a great place to visit if you’re just stopping by the area for a quick layover. There are plenty of good SeaTac hotels that will help make your visit extra convenient.
