The Great British Bingo Guide to the Best Beaches for Summer 2015

The British summer is here (well, supposedly), and the schools have broken up for the holidays. This means it’s time for that six-week break and getting out in the sunshine.

While we might have been able to entertain ourselves back in the day by playing outside from dawn until dusk, stopping for the occasional snack before going back to find our friends, modern kids need other forms of entertainment, otherwise they’ll be glued to the iPhones and XBox’s more than they already are.

Getting away is key for summer-long entertainment, but you don’t have to break the bank to do it. ‘Staycations’ are more popular than ever, and thousands of Brits are holidaying at home instead of jetting off to the sun.

Seaside summers in Britain

Rather than sitting on a beach in Benidorm, for instance, our country’s holidaymakers are now choosing the rejuvenated British coastal resorts of Blackpool, Brighton and Bournemouth instead.

Great British Bingo recently performed an online survey to find out which beach the Brits found to be their favourite, and of the 400 people who responded, almost 16% said that Blackpool was their top coastal destination.

With the famous Blackpool Tower to climb, the Pleasure Beach to keep the whole family entertained and, of course, the arcades, beach games and activities, and seaside chip shops (why do they always taste better at the seaside, by the way?), this classic seaside haunt has something for everyone.

This study showed that Brighton is the nation’s second favourite beach, closely followed by Bournemouth with the South Coast proving to have the most nominations. Southern favourites come from across Cornwall, Devon and Sussex, where Britons have been holidaying for decades. Scarborough was also a popular destination, as was Whitby – famous for its fish and chips – and Hunstanton; all located along the East coast.

Beach holidays whatever the weather

Of course, being Britain, you can never bank on the weather staying in your favour and this means that any trip to the seaside is going to need careful planning. You can’t just pack up your trunks, bikini and beach cricket set because the chances are that you might experience the odd (or consistent) shower at some stage.

Every year, the main high street retailers release great ranges of beachwear for everyone, and at decent prices too. This means that you can buy tops that can be worn either as everyday fashion while walking down the beach-front, and as protection from the potentially chilly winds that roll over Britain’s beaches.

You can also get everything you need from towels to sunglasses and hats that are great to keep you safe from the sun if it does decide to play ball with your summer plans!
